Building child care for the next generation of families 🐣

Both my parents put their hearts into teaching young children, at the sacrifice of a better paying job in another industry. But teachers are leaving the industry in mass mostly due to the fact that they can't make ends meet anymore. It's absolutely crucial that we get increased government support for schools to pay our teachers more and, as schools lower their costs, can lower the cost of childcare for parents as well.My cofounder Sydney Bennett shares her thoughts below on the childcare crisis that was discussed (briefly) in the presidential debate yesterday.

Are you doing research on brick-and-mortar businesses and sick of manually looking up Google Maps data? (ex. gyms, clinics, barbers) 🗺 📍 Comment "database" below and I'll send you a free playbook on how to automate building a database of Google Maps business data. This process will give you a database of all the specific businesses in the area you want, including their location, lat/lng, address, phone number, social media, website link, rating, etc.--Backstory: I needed to build a database of all preschools for my own startup scoping. After spending many hours toiling on how to do so, I inadvertently ended up creating a playbook for anyone to scrape local businesses from Google Maps and create a database of whatever they want.Thought I'd offer it up to the LinkedIn world in case it could be of help to anyone!Talk soon ✌

--A nugget from pitching 20 VCs/angels in the past 2 weeks--Would you like to present yourself in a more intelligent manner? Say that you DON'T KNOW something. Know what you know. Know what you don't know. People respond well to vulnerability, authenticity, and the confidence when you can admit that you don't know everything.I'm actively fundraising for my preseed right now, and in some conversations with investors, I was getting caught in a loop where I felt like I had to have EVERYTHING put together. The perfectionist in me was getting out. The reality? A perfectly fine answer to a question you don't know is "I don't know, but I'll figure it out and get back to you." Or even: "I'm actually not the expert in this field. What do you think?"I made a concerted effort to say "IDK" more this week, and the response has been great. If you're someone like me who falls into the trap of wanting to come across that you have everything together, try giving IDK a try. It works wonders.Talk soon ✌

📢 Professional Update 📢2023 was awesome - I lived in Spain and co-founded a $4M seed stage child care startup (The Village) where we operated 70+ child care facilities across the EU. I’m grateful for the entire Village team and I take fond memories and lasting friendships with me. So what’s next? Well, (1) I can now confidently call myself a seasoned entrepreneur, and (2) I’m starting a new project in NYC: my co-founder Sydney Bennett and I are building child care centers for the next generation of families. Our expertise in child care, operations & brand make us the right team to take this on.I am so, so excited and I know this project has potential to have a great impact for parents, children and teachers. Child care centers in the US need a major refresh - I know many of you are parents and may have experienced the extremely challenging process of finding suitable child care options.I’m ready to share more about what I’m working on and hear feedback from all of you. If you’re a parent, connector, investor, or just want to chat, let’s connect and find time to catch up ☕ Talk soon!

Since I've started as co-founder of The Village, I can't even count how many people have asked me, how did you get to be working in the childcare space?I'm not a mom. I'm not a dad. I'm not a former preschool teacher. I've never even worked in education. So why am I doing this? The foundation is knowing what motivates me. When I kicked off my 6 month sabbatical, I spent a good few months diving into what my motivations actually are. Meditation, journaling, reading, talking to 200+ people, doing exploratory trials. I became an expert in knowing HOW to find your motivation. After years of being in the corporate world, I already knew that I wanted to have full control in whatever I do, so I didn't strongly think about other corporate roles.I considered giving up on the business world and moving into music. I also considered becoming a soccer coach.Ultimately, I wrote down this synthesis: I want to use my skills and experience to help create social change in an industry where I can make a large impact. So I went forward and explored opportunities that fit those 3 criteria: (1) using my experience, (2) social change and (3) size of impact. After (many!) connections and explorations, I landed on the childcare problem. 350 millionchildrengloballyneed childcare but do not have access to it. The more I talk to parents and childcare providers, the more I feel passionate about the problem and want to help. This motivates me.How I got to The Village and found a fantastic co-founder in Aleksandra Kozera is another story and I'll leave that for another time. We're all on this earth for a short time. We all have different motivations in our life and all of them are equally valid. Career is only a part of the equation. What's important is taking the time to explore, reflect and define what that motivation is for you.#motivation #business #education #entrepreneurship #childcare

Layoffs happen, it's an unfortunate part of business and generally just a reflection of the state of our economy at the time. But layoffs should never happen a week before the holidays.I have friend who worked at Culture Amp who got laid off yesterday among many others, 2 days before his holiday break begun. For a company that prides itself in employee experience, this is simply poor form. And this happens in many tech companies frequently.Companies should create deadlines in which they decide on layoffs (end of November?), and plan annual budgeting around that deadline. Losing your job is hard enough, employees deserve to be treated humanely about it.#people #culture #layoffs
