Mobility

Excellent

  • Devastation Evokers are known for their exceptional mobility with the use of their signature spell Hover.
  • Their defensive toolkit consists of multiple abilities such as Obsidian Scales,Renewing Blaze, Twin Guardian and Zephyr which when utilized correctly, make them very durable.
  • In a 5-man setting Twin Guardian and Zephyr are especially powerful as they cover a larger portion of your team compared to raids.
  • The biggest drawback of Devastation Evokers is their short range which you need to play around through the use of their previously mentioned mobility.

Standard Mythic+ Build

High Mythic+ Build

When to use this Spec

Use this spec in the low to mid range of Mythic+ keys, it has slightly more damage than the High key variant.

Gameplay Altering Talents

Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation and Deep Dive sections below.

Spec Tree

  • Pyre
    • Your AoE essence spender, its essence is cost reduced by Dense Energy.
  • Eternity Surge
    • Your spec-specific Empower spell, enhanced by Eternity's Span.
    • This has additional cleave synergy with Scintillation.
  • Dragonrage
    • Your main DPS cooldown that is enhanced by Animosity and Tyranny.
  • Shattering Star
    • Increases your damage done to the target for a short duration, enhanced by Arcane Vigor.
  • Burnout
    • Fire Breath damage ticks have a chance to make your next Living Flame instant cast. Especially useful for optimizing damage while moving.
  • Causality
    • Makes Disintegrate and Pyre reduce the cooldown of your Empower spells.

Class Tree

  • Source of Magic
    • Provides mana restoration for the buffed healer, in addition to buffing them with Potent Mana.
  • Cauterizing Flame
    • An ability unique to Evokers that allows you to dispel Bleed debuffs in addition to other types.
  • Scarlet Adaptation
    • Often picked for a small DPS increase, stacks up from passive healing, and active off-healing. You can use your healing spells during downtime to gain some damage.
  • Unravel
    • A very powerful damaging spell that's only usable against absorb shields and you want to use it as often as possible in those situations.
  • Twin Guardian
    • Alters your Rescue into a very powerful defensive tool, placing a big absorb shield on both you and your target, this has a short 1 minute cooldown. Sometimes using this as a defensive cooldown can conflict with using Rescue as a mobility tool and vice versa.
  • Leaping Flames
    • Allows you to shoot an additional Living Flame per Empower rank after every Fire Breath cast for free cleave damage. These additional Living Flames can also proc Essence Burst from automatically healing your allies if there are not enough enemies to hit while also potentially getting Scarlet Adaptation value.

When to use this Spec

Use this spec in higher Mythic+ keys. The Oppressing Roar and Terror of the Skies combo is very useful to control mobs as they become more dangerous.

Rotation

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Devastation Evoker

Tier Set

  • (2-set): Disintegrate and Pyre inflict Obsidian Shards after damaging a target, dealing 18% of the damage done additionally as Volcanic damage over 8 sec.
  • (4-set): Increases the damage of Fire Breath and Eternity Surge by 12%, additionally casting either spell gives you the Blazing Shards buff for 5 seconds, which makes Obsidian Shards deal 200% more damage. During Dragonrage the effect of Blazing Shards is active permanently.

Single-target

Opener Rotation

  • The goal of the opener is to maximize your Dragonrage window and extend it 4 times with Animosity while not overcapping on Essence or Essence Burst.
  • If equipped, always use Nymue's Unraveling Spindle before Dragonrage and Belor'relos, the Suncaller outside of Dragonrage as you don't want to be channeling these during your dps cooldown.
  • Use Tip the Scales with your 2nd Fire Breath of the Dragonrage window.
  • Check below for the Dragonrage window priority after the initial opener.

Dragonrage Priority List

This is a general priority for your Dragonrage window.

  1. Cast Fire Breath - Rank 1.
  2. Cast Eternity Surge - Rank 1.
  3. Cast Shattering Star - Cast when at 1 or less Essence Burst.
  4. Cast Disintegrate until you are not capped on Essence.
  5. Cast Living Flame to proc Essence Burst if you have either Burnout, Iridescence: Red, Iridescence: Blue or Leaping Flames.
  6. Cast Disintegrate until you have no more Essence to cast it.
  7. Cast Azure Strike to proc Essence Burst.

Priority List

This is a general priority you aim to maintain throughout the fight.

  1. Cast Fire Breath
  2. Cast Shattering Star if you have 1 or no Essence Burst
  3. Cast Eternity Surge
  4. Cast Living Flame if you have 2 stacks of Burnout or a single one that is about to run out
  5. Cast Disintegrate until you have no more Essence to cast it
  6. Cast Living Flame until you have enough Essence to cast Disintegrate

Multi Target

2 Target Rotation

  • On 2 targets as a Devastation Evoker, you play exactly the same way as you would on Single-target.

3+ Targets Opener Rotation

  • Below you can see an example of how an opener might look with Volatility talented.
  • This can vary with target count because of Causality.
  • Azure Strike to proc Essence Burst inside Dragonrage window.

3+ Target Priority List

  1. Cast Deep Breath when Dragonrage is not active.
  2. Cast Fire Breath - Empower according to target count.
  3. Cast Eternity Surge - Empower according to target count.
  4. Cast Shattering Star if you have 1 or no Essence Burst.
  5. Cast Pyre as the Essence spender on 3+ Targets with Volatility talented, start using Pyre on 4+ Targets without it.
  6. Cast Azure Strike until you have enough Essence for your spender.

Deep Dive

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Devastation Evoker

Empower spells

Fire Breath

  • Used mostly with Rank 1 Empower on single target as you want to have the DoT effect up all the time for Burnout procs and Catalyze synergy.
  • Using Fire Breath with a higher Empower rank shortens the damage over time effect in favor of more direct damage, you want to utilize this when your target isn't going to live much longer.
  • Ranking up Fire Breath more in AoE situations is also generally recommended as Causality shortens the cooldown of the spell much more with Pyre spam and you would be overwriting your pre-existing DoT effect and wasting damage otherwise. In addition, you get better value from Leaping Flames.

Eternity Surge

  • Deciding what rank to use Eternity Surge on is very straightforward as it only increases the targets hit by 1 for each rank (or 2 with Eternity's Span).
  • Rank 1-4: 1/2/3/4 or 2/4/6/8 withEternity's Span targets hit.

In general, you should hold both Empower spells when Dragonrage is about to come off cooldown for proper Animosity extensions.

Playing around the current tier set bonus

  • (2-set): This is a passive effect that requires no interaction.
  • (4-set): with this set bonus you should stagger your Fire Breath and Eternity Surge by 5 seconds while not in Dragonrage to optimize the uptime of Blazing Shards.
  • Ideally you want Obsidian Shards up on your target from a Disintegrate or a Pyre before using an Empower spell outside of Dragonrage to maximize the benefit from Blazing Shards.

Disintegrate Mechanics

  • Baseline Disintegrate has a cast duration of two global cooldowns and four damage ticks occur within this time frame.
  • Utilizing the Pandemic mechanic you can start a new cast of Disintegrate after the 3rd damage tick has occurred which transfers the remaining duration and 4th damage tick of the previous cast to the next one.
  • This is how you spell queue Disintegrates, minimizing downtime and enabling you to use up Essence slightly faster to prevent overcapping.
  • All of this means that it is crucial to have a cast bar with Disintegrate ticks shown on it so you can re-cast at proper timings, one such cast bar is featured in the WeakAuras section further down the guide.

Using Rescue

  • Rescue is a great part of your toolkit as an Evoker, using it optimally requires fight awareness, especially in raids but can often save your less mobile allies from sticky situations.
  • When you don't need Rescue for its movement part, you should be looking to use it for the very potent defensive effect Twin Guardian as often as possible.

Using Hover

  • Managing and timing your Hover casts correctly in combat to get more casts in while dealing with mechanics is where you see the biggest difference in your DPS as the actual rotational optimization is not that complex for Devastation Evoker.
  • Starting a cast of a spell such as Disintegrate at the very end of a Hover buff still lets you finish that specific cast while moving even if the buff runs out during the cast, keep this in mind to get more benefit from each use of Hover!
  • A minor optimization is activating Hover during a global cooldown from an instant skill such as Living Flame with an Burnout proc.
  • Make sure you are tracking your uptime and charges of Hover well on your UI and get really comfortable with utilizing this ability as it is the most significant unique strength of an Evoker.

Understanding Mechanics

Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

  • Pandemic
  • Spell Queue Window
  • Stat Diminishing Returns

Vexamus

  • Mana Bomb deals formidable damage so you should rotate between Obsidian Scales and Twin Guardian for it, healing yourself just before it goes off can be crucial as well.
  • Approximately 2 minutes into the fight there is an overlap of Mana Bomb and Arcane Fissure, make sure you have a defensive cooldown ready for it.

Overgrown Ancient

  • You can hold your Empower spells slightly to line them up for efficient AoE damage if the adds are about to spawn.
  • Rotate between Obsidian Scales Twin Guardian Zephyr for Burst Forth.
  • Dispel Lasher Toxin from your tank when the adds become active, cleanse it around 15-20 stacks every time.

Crawth

  • Deafening Screech does increasing damage each stack. For the first and second casts, you should be fine without any defensive, on later ones you need to use Obsidian Scales, Twin Guardian or Zephyr to survive. You can check the Not Even Close tool to see exactly what you need to survive when pushing higher keys.

Echo of Doragosa

  • Use Obsidian Scales or Twin Guardian if you get Energy Bomb.
  • If you are at 3 stacks of Overwhelming Power, position yourself well to drop Arcane Rift.

Trash Tips

  • Vexamus area
    • Look out for Spellbound Scepters casting Mystic Blast and use either Tail Swipe or Wing Buffet to stop them as needed.
  • Overgrown Ancient area
    • Oppressing Roar + Deep Breath for a long Terror of the Skies stun is very good for both damage and helping your tank survive the standard massive pull in this area.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Buff your group with Blessing of the Bronze.
  • Buff your healer with Source of Magic.

Hackclaw's War-Band

  • Kill Tricktotem first. Make sure you instantly swap to Hextrick Totems when they spawn.

  • You should hold one charge of Obsidian Scales for Marked for Butchery.
  • Use the rest of your defensives and Cauterizing Flame to help your group deal with Gash Frenzy.

Treemouth

  • Treemouth frequently spawns 4 Decaying Slimes, Devastation Evoker has very efficient and frequent damage for these via Fire Breath and Eternity Surge
  • You also need to stop the Decaying Slimes cast, Gushing Ooze. Use Tail Swipe or Wing Buffet as needed.

Gutshot

  • If someone gets a Crippling Bite from the Rotfang Hyenas you can dispel it with Cauterizing Flame.
  • You can also Deep Breath out of Ensnaring Trap if you ever get caught in one.

Decatriarch Wratheye

  • Try to time your Fire Breath and Eternity Surge in addition to pooling Essence for each Rotburst Totem as they are crucial to focus down in this fight.
  • Use Obsidian Scales and Twin Guardian for Withered Eruption.

Trash Tips

  • Hackclaw's War-Band area
    • Use Tail Swipe and Wing Buffet to stop Vicious Clawmangle or Bone Bolt as needed. If the bolt does go through you can dispel it with Cauterizing Flame.
    • Be ready to Quell whatever is needed in this area as there are a lot of dangerous casts, such as Hideous Cackle
  • Treemouth Area
    • Fetid Rotsingers cast Summon Totem, focus down the Decay Totem spawned from this instantly.
    • Use Tail Swipe or Wing Buffet to stop Summon Lashers as needed.
    • Cauterizing Flame is great to help your healer deal with the bleeds.

  • Buff your group with Blessing of the Bronze.
  • Buff your healer with Source of Magic.

Watcher Irideus

  • On higher keys you can Oppressing Roar + Deep Breath for a long Terror of the Skies stun on the intermission Nullification Devices to stop them from casting Purifying Blast.
  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Static Surge.
  • Rescue is particularly useful in P2 for moving your allies out of the now larger Power Field and negating the initial damage ticks with Twin Guardian.

Gulping Goliath

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Overpowering Croak.
  • Use Wing Buffet (and Tail Swipe to a lesser extent) to help control the Curious Swoglets.
  • Use Expunge and/or Cauterizing Flame to dispel Gulp Swog Toxin from your allies as needed.

Khajin the Unyielding

  • Use your defensive cooldowns well as this is a rough healing fight, on higher keys you should coordinate more with your healer.
  • Renewing Blaze gets particularly good value because of the constant ticking damage.
  • Zephyr does not work for the damage in this fight even though it might seem so.

Primal Tsunami

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Tempest's Fury
  • Use Tail Swipe and Wing Buffet to stop the intermission adds from casting Inundate.
  • Sleep Walk can be very useful in stopping one of the four intermission adds early and making it move closer to the other ones (especially as Evoker tends to be one of the fastest runners.)

Trash Tips

  • Watcher Irideus area
    • Use Quell Tail Swipe Wing Buffet and Terror of the Skies to stop Expulse and Demoralizing Shout.
    • Focus on killing the Containment Apparatuses.
  • Khajin & Primal Tsunami area
    • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for the Glacial Proto-Dragons Deep Chill.
    • Stop Ice Shard to help out your tank.

Chargath, Bane of Scales

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Fiery Focus. This happens roughly every 55 sec so plan accordingly.
  • Try to pool Essence and have your Empower spells ready for every Fetter.
  • You can dispel every other Dragon Strike with Cauterizing Flame.

Forgemaster Gorek

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns to cover every Might of the Forge.
  • Renewing Blaze gets very good value on this fight as the boss chain-casts two high damaging abilities in a row.
  • If you use Obsidian Scales just before the second hit of Might of the Forge(about 60% through the cast), it also covers the Blazing Aegis right after.

Magmatusk

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Magma Eruption. This mechanic has a longer duration for each cast so later in the fight you might want to use multiple cooldowns and self-heals, especially if you are targeted by Lava Spray.

Warlord Sargha

  • Use Cauterizing Flame to dispel Curse of the Dragon Hoard once per phase.
  • Make sure to pool Essence and line up your burst damage for when Magma Shield breaks.

Trash Tips

  • Chargath area
    • Try to have Fire Breath, Eternity Surge and Deep Breath for burst damage when your group uses a Burning Chain.
    • Watch out for Qalashi Hunters Bold Ambush. The mob leaps on a random player and applies a short massive bleed, quickly dispel it with Cauterizing Flame or use a defensive cooldown like Twin Guardian to cover it.

    • Lava Flares cast Melt continuously that need to be interrupted or stopped. Use Tail Swipe, Wing Buffet, Terror of the Skies and Quell when needed.
  • Magmatusk area
    • Interrupt Molten Core from Qalashi Thaumaturges. They also cast Magma Conflagration, this spell needs to be stopped after the initial cast finishes and it starts a targeted channel.

Pre Dungeon Start

Melidrussa Chillworn

  • Rotate defensive cooldowns for Chillstorm also make sure to instantly Hover or Verdant Embrace away after placing it if you are targeted.
  • Unravel is great extra damage for the Frost Overload shield.

Kokia Blazehoof

  • Kokia casts Ritual of Blazebinding every 30 seconds, which spawns a Blazebound Firestorm. This add needs to be killed as soon as possible, Devastation Evoker has strong 2-target cleave for this fight.
  • Always make sure to bait Molten Boulder in a direction that doesn't block your group off, usually, this is towards the existing fire and edges of the area.
  • Apart from the interruptable spell, Blazebound Firestorm also casts Inferno which is the ability you want to rotate your defensive cooldowns for in this fight.
  • You can dispel Searing Wounds from your tank with Cauterizing Flame if they are in trouble.

Kyrakka and Erkhart Stormvein

  • In P1 Kyrakka targets one random player with Infernocore, use your Obsidian Scales if you are targeted.
  • In P2 Kyrakka starts applying Infernocore to multiple players so you want to nuke her down as quickly as possible, this is a great time to Bloodlust / Heroism and focus down the dragon while chaining defensive cooldowns whenever needed.

Trash Tips

  • Melidrussa Chillworn area
    • Flashfrost Earthshapers cast Tectonic Slam which need to be stopped, use Tail Swipe and Wing Buffet as needed.
  • Kokia Blazehoof area
    • This area is one of the roughest in all of Mythic+, Blazebound Destroyers casts Inferno and Living Bomb which are extremely deadly.
    • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for the Inferno casts while trying to keep one charge of Obsidian Scales available if you get a Living Bomb.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Buff your group with Blessing of the Bronze.
  • Buff your healer with Source of Magic.

Leymor

  • Rotate between Obsidian Scales and Zephyr for Explosive Brand and Consuming Stomp.
  • If you use a defensive just before Explosive Brands go off you can also cover the following damage event.
  • Fill gaps in your defensive cooldown rotation for the stomp with Twin Guardian.
  • In Higher M+ use the Not Even Close tool to check exactly what you need for surviving.

Azureblade

  • Interrupt and kill the Draconic Images.
  • Rotate defensive cooldowns for the intermission Overwhelming Energy as it is the only damage source in the fight.
  • Make sure to save Hover charges for the intermission as there is a lot of movement and dodging.

Telash Greywing

  • Keep a charge of Obsidian Scales ready in case you get targeted by Icy Devastator.
  • Rotate between the rest of your defensive cooldowns for Frost Bomb and Absolute Zero.

Umbrelskul

  • At 75%, 50%, and 25% Umbralskul spawns Detonating Crystals and one Hardened Crystal. The latter one has an absorb shield that needs to be broken, while the shield persists it deals massive AoE damage to your group.
  • Pool your Essence and have your Empower spells ready for these thresholds, also in higher keys you should coordinate big damage cooldowns and Bloodlust / Heroism usage.
  • These timings are also when you should use your defensive cooldowns so plan accordingly.

Trash Tips

  • Azureblade area
    • Interrupt Arcane Elementals Waking Bane and Ritual Seal Keepers Icy Bindings.
    • You can also use your Tail Swipe and Wing Buffet for stops here.

    • Use Zephyr on Bestial Roar.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Buff your group with Blessing of the Bronze.
  • Buff your healer with Source of Magic.

Granyth

  • Rotate defensive cooldowns for Shards of Stone.
  • Focus on killing Nokhud Saboteurs, your Permeating Chill automatically slows them down, you can also consider using Wing Buffet.
  • Once the boss is low enough that you only need one more Ballista, root the Saboteur going for it with Landslide and then you can ignore the next add.

The Raging Tempest

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Electrical Storm, using Renewing Blaze at the start of the cast is optimal.
  • Make sure to soak orbs early on to stack up Surge of Power quickly.

Teera and Maruuk

  • Rotate your defensive cooldowns for Gale Arrow. This is a very hard hitting ability so stacking multiple cooldowns might be required. Check the Not Even Close tool for higher M+ to see exactly what you need to survive.

Balakar Khan

  • You can dispel Rending Strike from the tank with Cauterizing Flame in P1.
  • Renewing Blaze is great for the intermission Stormwinds
  • Use Wing Buffet to help gather the Nokhud Stormcasters in the intermission while also interrupting one of the first casts.
  • Use your other stops as needed for the Storm Bolts.
  • Save a charge of Obsidian Scales for when you get targeted by a Spear in P1 or P2.

Trash Tips

  • Granyth area
    • Stop Rally the Clan or Hunt Prey with your Tail Swipe and Wing Buffet

    • If someone gets hit by Swift Stab you can dispel it with Cauterizing Flame
  • Teera and Maruuk area
    • Desecrated Ohunas cast Rotting Wind which needs to be stopped. You can use Wing Buffet or Tail Swipe but try to stop it last second as they are coded so that the next one starts when the first one is about to finish, this way you can stop two at the same time.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Buff your group with Blessing of the Bronze.
  • Buff your healer with Source of Magic.

The Lost Dwarves

  • Use a defensive cooldown if you are targeted by Ricocheting Shield.
  • Interrupt Defensive Bulwark.

  • Rotate defensive cooldowns for Crushing Stomp.

Emberon

  • Manage your Hover stacks so you can keep casting while dodging the Unstable Embers.

Chrono-Lord Deios

  • Use Deep Breath to remove Time Sink when you can not survive it.
  • Rotate defensive cooldowns for Wing Buffet.

Trash Tips

  • Bromach area
    • Both Chain Lightning and Spiked Carapace need to be stopped in this area, utilize Tail Swipe, Wing Buffet and Quell.
    • Use Cauterizing Flame to dispel Chomp from your tank.
  • Emberon area
    • Use defensive cooldowns for the Runic Protectors Earthquake.
    • Stop the Earthen Weavers Hail of Stone.

    • Wing Buffet
      • Heavy Wingbeats can be used to have Wing Buffet available for every pull

Trinkets

Below you can find active and passive alternatives to the recommended trinkets. Do note that some trinkets are better than others depending on the scenario.

Active Trinket alternatives

  • Ashes of the Embersoul
    • A very good 2 minute on-use trinket alternative with a 1 minute haste penalty after, can even be better than Spoils of Neltharus if you need more burst damage.
  • Nymue's Unraveling Spindle
    • The channeling on-use can be quite annoying to use in M+.
  • Belor'relos, the Suncaller
    • Can be very useful for on-demand single-target burst damage, especially powerful for the Brackenhide last boss totems.

Passive Trinket alternatives

  • Ominous Chromatic Essence
    • Is better or worse depending on how many people in your group are using it.
  • Whispering Incarnate Icon
    • Is better or worse depending on how many people in your group are using it, overall slightly weaker than the Chromatic Essence above.
  • Umbrelskul's Fractured Heart
    • Good for single-target damage and should be run by at least one person in the group for the sub 5% instant kill effect.
  • Neltharion's Call to Chaos
    • Fun trinket with a powerful proc to play around but the 5% increased damage taken during it makes it obsolete for the very highest keys.

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Devastation Evoker

  • Adaptive Dracothyst Armguards
    • The best available embellishment.
  • Blue Silken Lining
    • Albeit being available for many slots, you should aim to craft it on your Neck, Cloak, Waist, or Boots depending on your gear.

Remaining Sparks

  • Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped to keep your food buff even if you die.
  • You can fill in slots as you are gearing up with various crafted pieces but they are 525 ilvl and regular items are 528 on max item level therefore it is not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your two embellishments when you have BiS gear.
